2010 SOHIPOTOME Women In Hip Hop Honoree...

SOHIPOTOME Women In Hip Hop is pleased to announce the third Honoree for 2010.

Born in New York City, New York, Shera Bass always had two passions: writing and music.
In high school she wrote for her school newspaper but after graduation, she took a different path, attending John Jay Criminal Justice College. There she majored in Criminal Justice; and following college, she worked as an insurance investigator for several years. Still, Shera hoped that one day her love writing would become a full time occupation; and continued to further develop her creativity, writing short stories and poetry. Then in 2004, she moved to Columbia, South Carolina. It was there that where her writing unexpectedly blossomed into a full time career.

Upon arriving in Columbia, SC Ms. Bass took notice of an emerging music scene, and quickly saw that there was no communication outlet for it. Though many magazines existed, none were consistently providing coverage of the Independent Music Scene. In 2005, she started with her own urban, hip styled website, www.thenichecarolinamagazine.com. It began as a way for local talent to communicate local events, conferences and seminars in the Carolina market. The website took off immediately, receiving thousands of hits a month within a year. In July 2007,
The Niche Carolina Magazine was introduced and has remained the top Indie Magazine for three years.

As an inspiration and motivator to many independent artists, Ms. Bass realized that many of these sincere and gifted individuals' work remained unrecognized. She decided to create and co-produce The South Carolina Music Awards, hoping this would provide the platform that was needed in Carolina’s music community. Ms. Bass knows there is still more work to be done, but she states the secrets to her success is to “establish good business relationships and stand behind your word”.

Shera Bass also created a non-profit organization titled “Sincerely Shera”. Through her organization, she is able to extend help to local agencies with contributing food, clothes and books for needy families. To date, Shera is taking on another lifelong dream by working on her memoirs. She continues to keep her self grounded, spending her rejuvenation time with her family.
