Calling All Female Emcees: Monie Love Is Looking For You...

Veteran female emcee & radio personality Monie Love is putting together a mixtape series in support of all the females in hip-hop, known & unknown called:

Ladies 1st Presents: "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic". The mixtape series will showcase female emcees past & present, known & unknown showcasing their talent & music.

Monie Love's goal is to allow a collective voice of female artists to be heard with this series & shed light on the females in hip-hop!!

All Femcess with HEAT from various markets are welcome, whether from the U.S. OR overseas!! The mixtape series will be marketed online & on cd for PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY & will lead to performance showcases for female artists in the future.

Sohipotome Honors & Concert will take place March 13, 2010 at The Durham Arts Council.

The Sohipotome Features B.A.B.Y. event will also take place at The DAC.

The Sohipotome Radio Special airs on WXYC 89.3 FM Chapel Hill, NC Thursday March 11, 2010. This will be the 5th year for the radio special so special plans are in the works for that night!

Sohipotome 2010: Bridging The Gap...

One goal for 2010's event is to bridge the gap for the next generation of women in hip hop.

Sohipotome 2010 will be featuring the Building A Better You (B.A.B.Y.) Program. (B.A.B.Y.) is based in Durham, NC and is a personal development, life skills and fashion program for preteen and teenage girls. The mission of the program is to empower the girls to become focused, driven and confident. The organization's website is www.buildingabetteryou2.com.

Sharon Decoster (founder of B.A.B.Y.) and Sohipotome are presenting a day time event on the same day as the Sohipotome Honors & Concert (March 13). During the daytime event there will be workshops, an entertainment panel geared towards young people and their parents, and a fashion and talent showcase.

Sohipotome Radio Special...

The Sohipotome radio special (previously known as Women In Hip Hop) will air Thursday March 11, 2010 on WXYC 89.3 FM Chapel Hill, NC.

The radio special has been taking place for 4 years. It began as an idea when late one night I was digging in the vinyl stacks of the radio station and found tons of records from female rappers. And they had not been played in a long time. There was dust everywhere! Anyway I pulled those records out, cleaned them up and decided to dedicate a whole night to those forgotten femcees. Hence the women in hip hop radio special was born, which has led to the honors and concert event.

2010 will mark the 5th year for the radio special spinning female emcees exclusively all night. World wide streaming will be available on WXYC's website.

Sohipotome FAQ's...

Ever since planning has began and word begins to spread the following questions keep popping up. Read on for some of the more common questions being asked about 2010's event.

Q: Why has the name of the event changed from Women Of Hip Hop to Sohipotome?
A: The name of the event has been changed from Women Of Hip Hop to Sohipotome to better reflect the premise of the event. Sohipotome stands for “Soul and hip hop out of me.” For 2009's event two male rappers and one soul singer performed.
These types of artists should not feel excluded in participating based on the name of the event.

Q. How long have the events been taking place?
A. The Women In Hip Hop radio special has aired in March on WXYC 89.3 FM Chapel Hill, NC for the past 4 years.
This will be the second year for the concert and honors event
This will be the first year the event is called Sohipotome

Q. Why is the event taking place in March?
A. March is Women’s History Month.
